Silkk the Shocker: Rapper Bio, Discography, Career Overview & Legacy

By Daniel Rasul

Who Is Silkk the Shocker?

Vyshonne King Miller, known as Silkk the Shocker, is a New Orleans rapper and younger brother of Master P who released a string of albums on No Limit Records during the label's commercial peak — none of which were made good by the artistic merits of Silkk himself. Made Man (1999) debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 with 240,000 first-week copies and is widely considered one of the worst #1 rap albums ever released.

Career Overview

Silkk the Shocker was signed to his brother Master P's No Limit Records and released five albums during the label's commercial peak. Charge It 2 Da Game (1998) and Made Man (1999) both went platinum — entirely on the strength of No Limit's distribution machine and Master P's promotional force, not Silkk's rapping ability. RapReviews called his flow hot garbage. Album of the Year called him possibly the worst mainstream rapper of the era. He has released music independently since the No Limit era ended.

Why Made Man Is Our Lowest-Rated Album

Made Man (1999) earned 1/10 from us — our joint-lowest score alongside Kevin Federline's Playing with Fire. It debuted at #1 with 240,000 copies and went platinum. It is also one of the worst rap albums released at number one in history. Silkk raps behind the beat, has nothing interesting to say, and is saved repeatedly by his brother's marketing machine. Somebody Like Me featuring Mya is the one genuine highlight.

Legacy & Cultural Impact

Silkk the Shocker's career is the clearest demonstration of the No Limit commercial machine operating independently of artistic quality. Master P was the most effective rap businessman of the 1990s, and his ability to move 240,000 copies of a genuinely terrible rap album in one week is a business achievement that deserves recognition even as the album itself deserves the 1/10 we gave it.
