Jeezy: Biography, Discography, Career Overview & Legacy

By Jay Jewels

Introduction

Jeezy — long known as Young Jeezy — is one of the principal architects of trap music and one of the most influential street rappers of the 2000s. Nicknamed "the Snowman" and dubbed the "voice of the streets," the Atlanta-via-South Carolina artist built a movement out of mixtapes, raspy motivational anthems, and ice-cold drug-trade narratives that helped define a generation of Southern rap.

Early Life & Origins

Born Jay Wayne Jenkins on September 28, 1977, in Columbia, South Carolina, he moved to Georgia as a child and came up between Atlanta and Hawkinsville. He fell into street life young and began recording in his twenties under the name Lil' J.

He released the early projects Thuggin' Under the Influence (2001) and Come Shop Wit' Me (2003), and briefly joined the group Boyz n da Hood before going solo.

Breakthrough — Trap or Die & TM:101

Jeezy's 2004 mixtape Trap or Die, hosted by DJ Drama, created enormous street buzz and forced the mainstream to pay attention to the emerging trap sound. He signed to Def Jam through his Corporate Thugz Entertainment imprint.

His commercial debut, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 (2005), was powered by "Soul Survivor" with Akon and the viral "Snowman" T-shirt phenomenon. It went double platinum and became a trap landmark.

Discography & Career

He followed with The Inspiration: Thug Motivation 102 (2006), the politically tinged The Recession (2008, number one), and TM:103 Hustlerz Ambition (2011).

Later projects include Seen It All: The Autobiography (2014), Church in These Streets (2015), Pressure (2017), TM104 (2019), and The Recession 2 (2020), as well as the DJ Drama collaboration SNOFALL (2022). He eventually dropped "Young" from his name to record simply as Jeezy.

Style, Rivalry & Legacy

Jeezy's appeal rests less on technical lyricism than on charisma, conviction, and atmosphere — a gravelly, commanding voice over sinister Shawty Redd production, turning hustler tales into motivational anthems.

His famed rivalry with Gucci Mane defined Atlanta rap for years before the two reconciled in a celebrated 2020 Verzuz battle. As a trap pioneer alongside T.I. and Gucci Mane, his influence on modern Southern hip-hop is foundational.
