Introduction

The hip-hop world barely caught its breath this week. Drake kept his grip on the top of the charts, D12 prepped one of the most anticipated reunions in years, and the Recording Academy reshaped its rulebook — all while the courts handed down a sobering verdict in one of rap's longest-running legal sagas. Here's everything that mattered across the culture over the last few days.

Drake's “ICEMAN” Locks Up a Fourth Week at No. 1

Drake isn't letting go of the Billboard 200. “ICEMAN” notched its fourth consecutive week atop the chart, moving roughly 133,000 equivalent album units in the tracking week ending June 11 and standing as the longest-running No. 1 album of 2026 so far.

The run pushes Drake to 41 career weeks at No. 1, extending his record for the most weeks on top among hip-hop artists. “ICEMAN” is also the first R&B/hip-hop album to spend its first four weeks at No. 1 since Travis Scott's “Utopia” in 2023 — a reminder that, post-Kendrick, Drake's commercial machine is running as hot as ever.

D12 Set to Return With “D12 Forever (Vol. 1)” This Friday

One of the most anticipated reunions of the year arrives June 19, when D12 releases “D12 Forever (Vol. 1)” — the Detroit group's first album since 2004's “D12 World” and their first body of work since the 2006 death of founding member Proof.

The 15-track project, led by the single “Tear It Down” featuring Xzibit and B-Real, reportedly folds in an unreleased verse from Proof, giving longtime fans an emotional thread back to the crew's classic era. Expect Eminem's fingerprints all over a record decades in the making.

Vince Staples Maps Out a Fall “Cry Baby” Tour

Fresh off his seventh studio album “Cry Baby,” Vince Staples announced a 16-date North American run. The full-band “Cry Baby Tour” kicks off October 19 at Atlanta's Tabernacle and wraps November 15 at San Francisco's The Warfield, hitting Brooklyn, Toronto, Chicago and more along the way.

An artist presale began June 17, with general on-sale set for June 19. The live-band setup signals Staples leaning into a fuller, more dynamic stage show to match the record.

The Grammys Add Five New Categories for 2027

The Recording Academy unveiled five new categories ahead of the 69th Grammy Awards, set for February 7, 2027: Best Asian Pop Music Performance, Best R&B Collaboration or Duo/Group Performance, Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Folk Album and Best Latin Song.

The additions — alongside loosened Best New Artist eligibility rules — push the Grammys to 100 categories. The new Best R&B Collaboration field in particular hands hip-hop and R&B's collaborative culture a dedicated spotlight.

Mystikal Sentenced to 20 Years as Plea-Withdrawal Bid Fails

Louisiana rapper Mystikal — born Michael Tyler — was sentenced to 20 years in prison after a judge declined to let him withdraw the guilty plea he entered in March in a 2022 rape case. His attorneys had argued he made the plea under “significant emotional distress” without enough time to weigh the consequences.

Tyler had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of third-degree rape, which carried a 20-year sentencing cap. The multi-Grammy-nominated artist will now serve the full term.

Tyler, The Creator Shoots Down Jazz Album Rumors

Speculation that Tyler, The Creator was cooking up a jazz project for his next era spread fast online — and he killed it just as quickly. Responding to a fan account hyping the idea, Tyler wrote, “Not at all lol and do not get stuck on this idea please.”

The rumor echoed an earlier troll from Lil Yachty about a supposed “Hebrew jazz funk” album, which Tyler also shot down. For now, fans hoping for a left-turn into jazz will have to keep waiting.

Nicki Minaj Says She Regrets Some of Her Old Lyrics

In a candid appearance on “The Bryce Crawford Podcast,” Nicki Minaj admitted there are lyrics from her catalog she'd rewrite today. She reflected that much of the culture she helped shape steered fans toward “money, status and material things” rather than something more meaningful, and said she underestimated her influence over younger listeners early in her career.

The comments, tied to what she described as a more conservative personal turn, drew mixed reactions from her fanbase — some praising the self-reflection, others wary of the shift.

That's the wrap for this cycle. With D12's reunion landing Friday and Drake still refusing to vacate the throne, the back half of June is shaping up to be just as loud. Check back next time for the latest from across the culture.
