Eminem vs ICP: Did the Beef Really Start Over a Maybe Flyer?

Before the parody songs, album skits and years of insults, the Eminem vs ICP beef allegedly began with one small word: maybe.
Introduction
In late-1990s Detroit, Eminem was still climbing. Insane Clown Posse already had a strong local following. According to ICP’s version of the story, Eminem approached Violent J with a flyer for the Slim Shady EP release party.
The problem was that the flyer listed appearances by artists including ICP, followed by “maybe.” Violent J was offended because ICP had not agreed to appear. Eminem reportedly argued that “maybe” meant exactly that — maybe they would, maybe they would not.
Why Such a Small Thing Became Beef
On paper, it sounds ridiculous. But local scenes run on respect, permission and reputation. If a rising rapper uses your name to promote a party without asking, that can feel like disrespect — especially in a city where everybody knows everybody.
The flyer was small. The ego around it was not.
The dispute grew into radio shots, parody songs, Eminem album skits and years of weird Detroit rap tension. It eventually cooled, with people around D12 and Psychopathic Records helping end the feud in the mid-2000s.
Verdict: True Origin Story, Petty but Important
The “maybe” flyer story is the accepted origin from ICP’s side and is widely repeated in summaries of the feud. It sounds petty, but that is what makes it believable: many rap beefs start with something tiny, then grow because nobody wants to look weak.
In hindsight, it is almost funny. A single uncertain word helped kick off one of Detroit rap’s strangest long-running conflicts.
