Cam'ron: Rapper Bio

Cameron Ezike Giles — born February 4, 1976, in Harlem, New York — is one of the most charismatic and stylistically original figures in the history of East Coast rap. Known as Cam'ron or Killa Cam, he founded the Diplomats (Dipset) collective, wore pink and purple fur coats while every other rapper was committed to black and grey, coined an enormous volume of slang that permeated New York's hip-hop lexicon, and made some genuinely excellent albums that are more respected now than they were at the time.

Early Life

Raised in Harlem, Cam'ron was a standout basketball player in high school and started at point guard for Manhattan Center High School alongside his childhood friend Mase — the future Bad Boy rapper, not an athlete. He turned to rap in the mid-1990s; introduced to the Notorious B.I.G. by Mase, he signed to Lance "Un" Rivera's Untertainment label (via Epic) for his first two albums, later joining Jay-Z's Roc-A-Fella Records in 2001 before leaving in 2005.

Career Overview

Confessions of Fire (1998) was his debut. S.D.E. (2000) and Come Home with Me (2002) built his reputation. Purple Haze (2004) is his masterpiece — a densely layered, idiosyncratic rap album that is now considered one of the finest New York rap albums of the 2000s. Killa Season (2006), which still debuted at #2, was a critical step down. His feud with Jay-Z produced some memorable diss material but ultimately harmed his mainstream profile. He has remained active through the 2010s with Dipset reunions and solo projects.

Legacy & Impact

Cam'ron's influence on New York rap extends beyond his albums — his fashion choices alone changed what rappers thought they were allowed to wear, and his slang generation was unparalleled. Purple Haze is one of the most creatively distinctive albums in New York rap history.
