LL Cool J: Rapper Bio

James Todd Smith — born January 14, 1968, in Queens, New York — is one of the founders of commercial hip-hop and the first rapper to prove that the genre could sustain a career across decades. Known as LL Cool J (Ladies Love Cool James), he was the inaugural signee to Def Jam Records at age sixteen, released the first rap love ballad, survived being declared irrelevant multiple times, and is still one of the most recognisable faces in entertainment five decades after his debut.

Early Life

Growing up in St. Albans, Queens, LL began rapping at age nine and was recording demos by his early teens. He sent a demo tape to Rick Rubin, who was running Def Jam Records out of his NYU dormitory, and was signed as the label's first artist. He was sixteen years old.

Career Overview

Radio (1985) is one of the most important debut albums in hip-hop history, establishing hard rap as a commercial product at a moment when its future was uncertain. Bigger and Deffer (1987) produced I Need Love, the first successful rap ballad. He survived being written off as irrelevant multiple times — most notably after MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice made pop-rap the dominant commercial sound — by releasing Mama Said Knock You Out (1990), which is widely regarded as one of the greatest comeback albums in rap history. He has since built a parallel career as an actor, most notably co-hosting the Grammy Awards and starring in NCIS: Los Angeles for fifteen seasons.

Legacy & Impact

LL Cool J's longevity in hip-hop is unmatched. He was a foundational figure in the 1980s, a comeback artist in the 1990s, a crossover pop-rap star in the mid-1990s, and a mainstream entertainment institution from the 2000s onward. His impact on the template for rap stardom — the physicality, the charisma, the ability to balance toughness with romance — is felt everywhere.
