The Notorious B.I.G.: Rapper Bio

Christopher George Latore Wallace — born May 21, 1972, in Brooklyn, New York — is universally regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Known as The Notorious B.I.G., Biggie Smalls, or simply Biggie, he released two studio albums across a career that was cut devastatingly short when he was murdered in Los Angeles on March 9, 1997 at age 24. Despite releasing only 32 official tracks in his lifetime, his status in rap history is rivalled only by Tupac Shakur.

Early Life

Raised in the Clinton Hill neighbourhood of Brooklyn by his Jamaican immigrant mother, Biggie was a gifted student who turned to drug dealing in his teens. He began freestyling on the streets of Brooklyn and his demo tapes circulated in New York until they reached The Source magazine's Unsigned Hype column in 1992. Sean "Puffy" Combs signed him to Bad Boy Records, which would become the defining East Coast label of the mid-1990s.

Career Overview

Ready to Die (1994) was one of the most complete debuts in rap history — cinematic, darkly funny, and technically immaculate. It went 4× Platinum and established Biggie as the dominant force in East Coast rap. His growing rivalry with 2Pac and Death Row Records became the central narrative of the mid-90s rap scene, escalating dangerously before Tupac was murdered in September 1996. Six months later, Biggie was shot and killed in Los Angeles while promoting the soon-to-be-released Life After Death. The double album debuted at #1 and is one of the best-selling rap albums ever made.
