Dr. Dre: Rapper Bio

Andre Romelle Young — born February 18, 1965, in Compton, California — is the most influential producer in the history of hip-hop and one of its most successful entrepreneurs. Known as Dr. Dre, he co-founded N.W.A, defined gangsta rap, created the G-funk sound, launched the careers of Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar, built a $3 billion headphone business, and sold it all to Apple. As a rapper he has released only three studio albums, each one era-defining.

Early Life

Raised in Compton and Inglewood, Dre found his calling in music at the age of 16 when he began DJing at a local club called the Eve After Dark. He became a member of the World Class Wreckin' Cru before co-founding N.W.A with Eazy-E, Ice Cube, MC Ren, and DJ Yella. N.W.A's Straight Outta Compton (1988) was one of the most controversial and influential albums in American music history, selling over 3 million copies despite a near-total radio blackout.

Career Overview

After leaving N.W.A in 1991 following a dispute with Eazy-E and manager Jerry Heller, Dre signed to Death Row Records with Suge Knight. The Chronic (1992) introduced G-funk — a weed-and-synthesiser sound built on Parliament-Funkadelic samples — to the world and remains one of the most important albums in rap history. It also launched Snoop Dogg. After leaving Death Row in 1996, Dre founded Aftermath Entertainment and signed Eminem (1997) and 50 Cent (2002), producing their career-defining albums. 2001 (1999) was a commercial and critical smash. Compton (2015) was released alongside the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton. The sale of Beats by Dre to Apple for $3 billion in 2014 made him one of the wealthiest figures in music history.
