Who Is Mike Jones?
Michael Shane Jones, known as Mike Jones, is a Houston rapper whose debut album Who Is Mike Jones? (2005) went platinum on the strength of Still Tippin' — a genuine piece of Houston rap history that placed him alongside Paul Wall and Slim Thug in the mainstream window the Swisha House sound briefly opened. The Voice (2009) arrived four years later to an audience that had moved on.
Quick Stats
Career Overview
Mike Jones built his reputation in Houston's screwed-and-chopped scene before Still Tippin' — featuring Paul Wall and Slim Thug — became one of 2005's signature Southern rap tracks. Who Is Mike Jones? debuted at #3 on the Billboard 200 and went platinum. He became known for giving out his phone number (281-330-8004) in his songs. A four-year gap followed while he worked on a shelved EP. The Voice (2009) arrived to mixed-negative reviews and modest sales.

Why The Voice Failed
The Voice (2009) earned 3/10 from us. DJBooth said it goes into unlistenable territory with tracks ranging from a half-baked dance craze to butchering a celebratory anthem. The defining problem was that the Who? Mike Jones! catchphrase was no longer a question anyone was asking in 2009. The Houston rap moment had closed. The audience had moved on to Drake, Lil Wayne, and T-Pain.
Legacy & Cultural Impact
Mike Jones's cultural legacy is entirely concentrated in a two-year window (2004–2006) when Houston screwed-and-chopped aesthetics briefly dominated mainstream rap through the Swisha House imprint. Still Tippin' is a legitimate piece of Southern rap history. His phone number (281-330-8004) became one of rap's most recognisable gimmicks. Everything after 2006 is a footnote.
