Who Is Iggy Azalea?
Amethyst Amelia Kelly, known as Iggy Azalea, is an Australian rapper who relocated to the United States at 16 and built a career that peaked spectacularly with Fancy (2014) — which spent seven weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 — before collapsing almost as quickly under a combination of cultural criticism, industry disputes, and follow-up albums that could not match the moment.
Quick Stats
Career Overview
Iggy Azalea left Australia at 16 and spent years in Atlanta developing her rap career. T.I. signed her to Grand Hustle in 2012 after her DIY mixtapes attracted attention. Fancy (2014) featuring Charli XCX spent 7 weeks at #1 on the Hot 100. The New Classic (2014) debuted at #3. However, cultural criticisms mounted — her Southern accent delivery over rap, appropriation controversies, and feuds with Azealia Banks among others — and her career stalled. Digital Distortion was announced and shelved. In My Defense (2019) received a Metacritic of 39. She has since operated independently.

Two Albums on Our Worst List
The New Classic (2014) earned 3/10 from us — Fancy was one of the year's biggest hits but the album around it was incoherent and thin. In My Defense (2019) earned 2/10 — five years passed, a label collapsed, Digital Distortion was shelved, and the follow-up album arrived with Pitchfork calling it cartoonish approximations of rap. One point lower because no growth occurred in five years.
Legacy & Cultural Impact
Iggy Azalea's career is the clearest recent example of a single being everything. Fancy was a perfect convergence of production (Fancy's piano riff), hook (Charli XCX's chorus), and cultural timing. None of those factors could be replicated. Her story also became a significant moment in the ongoing discussion around cultural appropriation in rap — specifically the adoption of a Southern Black vocal delivery by a white Australian artist.
